Having a Problem at Work?

If you have a problem at work, there are several things you can do to try to address it. Ultimately, it's always better if you and other workers have an independent voice that lets you bring issues to your employer without singling you out. There's a name for that independent voice: a union. But unions can be hard to organize, particularly in today's climate. Here are some other ideas:

  1. See if your employer has an ombudsman or some other office designed to let you complain without risk.

  2. Find others in your workplace who are likely to be sympathetic and willing to help you out.

  3. Sit down with your supervisor and try to work out the problem.

  4. Make your case public: let local organizations, churches, newspapers, and television stations know of your plight.

  5. If you feel your legal rights have been violated, consider contacting a lawyer who may be able to help negotiate a settlement or file a lawsuit.

None of these may work, and you should always use your best judgment to decide what's most likely to work for you in your situation.
